Title: The Four Agreements
Author’s Name: Don Miguel Ruiz, Ph,D
Audience: All, Women, Women in Business, Teachers, Parents, Grandparents, CEO’s & Employees, College Students, children & Professionals
Description/Brief Summary: Don Miguel Ruiz is a Mexican author of Toltec texts. His teachings may seem New Age, but in reality they are not!
The Four Agreements, his most influential work was published in 1997 and has sold around 7.5 million copies in the U. S. This work has been translated into 38 languages world-wide. The Four agreements advocate personal freedom due to the agreements we make with ourselves. Making these same agreements with others who present limitations and unhappiness in our lives, minimizes their power and strength. We all are on the path to find our own integrity, self-love, and peace. What we tell ourselves makes us who we are.
Featured on the Oprah Show, The Four Agreements, address our emotions and how we handle them.
The Four Agreements Are:
- Be Impeccable With Your Word means that you say what you do and do what you say. When you become aware of how powerful your words are you become conscious about how they affect and impact those around you. Words spoken to children can change the course of their lives. Words spoken to an adult can change a child’s life.
- Don’t Take Anything Personally means just that! It really does not matter how bad your day is going. What matters is what you do with the 24 hours you have been given and how you pass on the blessed happiness that has been given to you! Smile when you write or when you call someone. What you feel comes through your words. When you don’t take anything personally, how you perceive the world will remarkably change.
- Don’t Make Assumptions means to not make assumptions. When we make assumptions, we miss what truth is spread before us! The story of the gift of the Magi is a wonderful story of how assumptions were made and all the while they were ruined at the same time. The purchase of a comb for long hair that was sold for another gift… just don’t assume anything
- Always Do Your Best is very self-explanatory but this statement is taken for granted and dismissed every day. Part of the reason is that most humans do not look at what they have achieved in a day. They are not grateful for the skills they needed to learn and the faculties they needed to learn them each day. Our BEST should always be our best, however, each time we don’t give our BEST the world misses out on our own individual BEST contribution!
Sample: “Humans are dreaming all the time. Before we were born the humans before us created a big outside dream that we will call society’s dream or the dream of the planet. The dream of a planet is the collective dream of billions of smaller, personal dreams, which together create a dream of a family, a dream of a community, a dream of a city, a dream of a country, and finally a dream of the whole humanity. The dream of the planet includes all of society’s rules, its beliefs, its laws, its religions, it’s different cultures and ways to be, its governments, schools, social events and holidays.”
“We are born with the capacity to learn how to dream, and the humans who went before us teach us how to dream the way society dreams.”
My Four Agreements Book Review:
Learning about the way the world has come together to teach us how to dream… should teach us that each of the Four Agreements when made to ourselves, can change our lives completely. Personally, I can see that these agreements could take years to practice or they could take 4 weeks. I choose to practice one each week for a month, and at the end of the month… the first three were already great habits!
I found myself wanting to learn more. Other books by Don Miguel Ruiz’s, The Mastery of Love, The Voice of Knowledge and Prayers, The Companion to the Four Agreements & The Fifth Agreement.
I recommend this book first, if you like some, like to read all that one can from the same author, in a specific period of time. Get The Four Agreements below.
