The lack of progress during the recent government shutdown caused Senator Susan Collins of Maine to draft a three point plan to stop the stalemate that she thought both parties could live with.
Women in the Senate
She presented her plan on the Senate floor and dared her colleagues in the Senate to come up with something better. She was soon joined by Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire.
Soon Democrat Senators Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Patty Murray of Washington joined the debate. They urged their Republican colleagues to temper their demands and offered compromise. Together these women started a bipartisan group whose negotiating formed the centerpiece of the Senate deal to reopen the government.
Women as an Inspiration
The “old boys club” in the Senate needs to watch out, with the 20 female Senators we are seeing new standards of civility and bipartisanship sprouting up in Washington, DC. The Senate “sisterhood” offers many of the benefits of the original male version with mentor lunches and regular dinners, but also bridal and baby showers and playdates for children and grandchildren. There is also an unwritten rule that the women do not publicly criticize one another. The women in the Senate are providing a breath of fresh air and inspiration in Washington.
