It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 22 years since the first Mario Kart game came out, but it truly has been. The first Mario Kart debuted on August 27, 1992, as Super Mario Kart. The game was for the SNES and went on to sell 8 million copies, making it the third best-selling SNES games of all time. Now, fans of the franchise are looking forward to the next installment, Mario Kart 8.
When Is the New Mario Kart Coming Out?
The new Mario Kart, titled simply Mario Kart 8, was released on May 30, 2014. The Mario Kart 8 trailer debuted in April, and ever since then there has been quite a buzz about the game. More and more Mario Kart 8 news and rumors are cropping up online every day, leaving less and less of the details of the game remaining a mystery. So far, it has been confirmed that Mario Kart 8 will only be available for Wii U, and there are no plans to produce it for other systems at this time.
What’s the Same in Mario Kart 8?
When you play Mario Kart 8 you will find that the new game is very familiar to fans of the series. The premise will be the same as in previous games: players will race as their favorite Nintendo characters versus real players or the computer. While racing, you’ll have the opportunity to gather items and win tournaments. The tracks are set in the Mushroom Kingdom as with previous games, and there are plenty of classic Mario baddies and scenery to enjoy.
What’s New in Mario Kart 8?
One thing that stands out about Mario Kart 8 is its impressive cast of characters. The game has more playable characters than ever before with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Toadette, Wario and Waluigi among the Mario Kart 8 characters. If that’s not enough, you can also race as Shy Guy, Metal Mario, Lakitu, Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy and Ludwig. The Mario Kart 8 characters are far more realistic in appearance than ever before, thanks to HD capabilities of the Wii U. The Graphics are by far the best of any game put out by Nintendo!
Another fun new feature of Mario Kart 8 is the hover car. The karts in the game have wheels that fold under and become blasters, allowing you to float. In some levels, you can drive on the walls or on the ceiling, and Nintendo has designed to make these experiences fun without leaving you feeling queasy.
Mario Kart 8 Reviews: The Good and Bad
Many Mario Kart 8 reviews have been posted online, and so far, the critics have been mostly positive about the game. Reviewers seem to agree that Mario Kart 8 is hard enough to be challenging and that despite its familiarity, there are enough new elements to make the game exciting. The biggest criticisms of the game are related to a lack of online features, including an inability to chat during races. That being said, with the graphic play in HD this makes it a must buy!
