The 2014 NBA Playoffs began on April 20 as a 16 team tournament to decide who would be holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy at its conclusion.
The 2014 NBA Playoffs had all the usual suspects present such as the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder.
There were also some unexpected entries like the Charlotte Bobcats and Washington Wizards.
Following is a quick review of the 2014 NBA Playoff Brackets through the semi-final round.
The NBA Playoffs 2014 schedule included the typical “why bother” series. This year it featured LeBron James and his Miami Heat versus a team owned by Michael Jordan, the Charlotte Bobcats. It quickly ended with “Kings James” and his court defeating MJ’s group in a 4-0 sweep.
The surprising Washington Wizards beat the Chicago Bulls 4 games to 1 with 3 of the 4 victories coming in the Windy City.
Indiana had a tougher task eliminating the Atlanta Hawks in 7 games while number 6 seed Brooklyn upset the 3 seed Toronto, also needing the maximum number of contests to do so.
NBA 2014 SEMI-FINALS
Miami had little trouble disposing of the Geritol laced Brooklyn Nets including elder Boston refugees Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. The Nets lone “W” came in Game 3 at the Barclays Center of what turned out to be a 5 game series.
A much younger core of Wizards featuring John Wall and Bradley Beal put up a better fight before succumbing to the Indiana Pacers in 6 games.
This sets up a repeat of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals between the Pacers and Heat.
In perhaps the first rounds most surprising competition, the “Battle of Texas” between San Antonio and Dallas went the full 7 games. The Spurs finally finished off the Mavs with a blowout 119-97 series ender, but not before Vince Carter’s buzzer beating trey evened the series at 2-2 and then Dallas sent the series back to the Alamo City tied at 3.
Portland dispatched of Dwight Howards Houston Rockets in 6 games. It should be noted 3 of the 6 went to overtime with the Trail Blazers winning 2 of them.
Oklahoma had its hands full with a rabid group of Memphis Grizzlies. It took the full 7 games for the Thunder and a somewhat beleaguered Kevin Durant to finally eliminate the ferocious bears. Once again 3 OT games were required prior to the final ending and this time Memphis was 2-1.
During the 2014 NBA Playoffs the L.A. Clippers / Golden State Warriors series began as any 1st round event might, but ended under the cloud of L.A. owner Donald Sterling’s recorded ranting’s. Under the circumstances give the Clippers credit for persevering to win it in 7 games.
It appears San Antonio got back on track by eliminating the Portland Trail Blazers in 5 games. The combined score in the series was Spurs 544, Trail Blazers 477… enough said?
A suddenly very relevant Kevin Durant led the OKC Thunder to a 4-2 series victory against the Clippers. His 36, 40 and 39 point performances in Hollywood were especially impressive.
So here we are after all is said and done through the first two rounds with the number 1 and 2 seeds facing off in both conferences.
Don’t be surprised if a Heat / Spurs 2014 Finals rematch is seen in the horizon.
